Volvo Group started Volvo Autonomous Solutions on the first of January and has been hard at work since. According to them, “creating solutions capable of maximizing transport efficiency through advanced automation is the goal of an entire industry.” They believe that the way to start this is with light mining.
Starting with light mining is actually not directly related to the task but is the perfect place to start using their technology as automating the mining vehicles is relatively simple (compared to road cars) and can be done in a confined and safe space. Their plan is to start small and build on top of each success that they see, until they are eventually able to create automated solutions across all of their companies.
Volvo Autonomous Solutions are currently working on projects that are either adapting current Volvo machines or developing brand new ones. Volvo Group are no strangers to autonomous vehicles with a handful of examples already working such as the Volvo Vera.
Auto Trendy’s take:
Volvo’s strategy seems quite logical. Although most people are looking towards developing autonomous vehicles for the road, it is extremely complicated to do so safely and there is an immense number of variables involved. The autonomous technology still needs to be developed, so it is quite smart for Volvo Group to start working on more low-risk vehicles until they are confident that their technology will work safely with high-risk vehicles. Other than road cars, automation is taking over every industry, and it is wise for Volvo to be at the forefront of this revolution.
