Blackberry are making unique technological partnerships and this time they’re not focusing on phones. Their software-based business model has been in action for years and it became clear that they are shifting their focus from physical products to software when their parent company, RIM, acquired software company QNX in 2010. QNX are major software developers that specialize in security. They create software for several industry needs such as medical devices, industrial automation, and the automotive industry to name a few.

Security is Blackberry’s key selling point, so it was a no brainer to take over QNX. They are now releasing software for autonomous and otherwise connected vehicles. Their software can be integrated into every functionality of the car, from the infotainment system to the Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS).

Blackberry are targeting partnerships with key automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufactures) and have already partnered with Jaguar Land Rover. They believe that strong partnerships lead to beneficial collaborations that would see all parties involved enjoying the advantages of modern innovation.

Auto Trendy’s take:

When people think about Blackberry, the first thought that comes to mind is smartphones. Before the touchscreen revolution, Blackberry had the vast majority of the smartphone market and their success could be directly attributed to their secure systems and convenient software. For them to now pivot into the modern software-based automotive market at a relatively stage of the automotive industry becoming specifically software based is likely a smart move that will see them as a potential key influencer in this quickly developing industry. As such, if Blackberry plays their cards correctly, they could be the key providers of secure software for most major automotive manufacturers.
