The Volkswagen company revealed the VW ID.3 as a concept electric vehicle back in 2016. Now, four years later, the car is before production and the 1st edition is available for ordering from June 17, 2020 (tomorrow). The Volkswagen company (VW) expects to start delivering the first cars in September.
Sticking to its tradition and to the real meaning of its name, VW aims to produce futuristic electric vehicles for everyday use and to bring them to the masses. The ID.3 is a huge step in this direction. It is a compact vehicle in the shape of a five-door hatchback, providing 385 liters of boot space.
The fully electric ID.3 is the first car to be built on the new VW’s MEB (Modular Electric Toolkit/ MEB Architecture). It differs from most of the other company vehicles by having its electric motor mounted on the rear axle. The 1st edition uses the medium size battery of 58 kWh.
The performance maxes out at the figures shown in the table below.
Overall, the ID.3 is a giant step towards electrifying the automotive industry and the world in general. It is a vehicle that will suit most people’s daily needs and, on top of that, it is an incredibly safe car as it incorporates numerous driver assistance systems. It has advanced technologies, such as a front camera for identifying road signs, as well as a rearview camera, lane-keeping and lane changing assistance, pedestrian detection, and an emergency braking system.
Auto Trendy’s take:
We, as automotive engineers, believe that VW has always been doing a great job in providing cars for the masses. Nowadays, in these fast-changing times, they keep achieving amazing results. The ID.3 is proof of that. The vehicle’s starting price is €30,000 and the exclusive edition with the mid-range battery (58 kWh) will cost less than €40,000.
